Conferences and Meetings
In recent years, a number of conferences have taken place in various parts of the world dedicated to different aspects of the translation of Buddhist literature, principally but not exclusively of the Tibetan tradition. In particular, the 2008 Translators Conference held in Boulder, Colorado was an essential development in the field and paved the way for future conferences. In April 2011 Buddhist publishers and the Tsadra staff, fellows, and grantees all gathered from around the world to share their work and ideas. This meeting was the seed for the development of a concerted effort on Tsadra's part to support future conferences.
In 2013 Tsadra Foundation collaborated with the University of Colorado to facilitate a translation conference with the Center for Asian Studies. The "Translating Buddhist Luminaries Conference" saw young scholars and experienced translators meeting together and workshopping translations of 19th century Tibetan texts that will be published in a collection dedicated to Gene Smith.
The 2014 Translation & Transmission Conference
In 2014 Tsadra Foundation launched a series of large-scale conferences in order to provide an international forum for sustained dialogue and the sharing of ideas and experiences for translators of Tibetan texts, as well as for collective reflection on the larger cultural and societal dimensions of the transmission of Tibetan Buddhism to the contemporary sphere. The 2014 Translation & Transmission Conference was held October 2-5 in Keystone, Colorado. For more information see the conference website:
Religion and the Literary in Tibet
In 2015 Tsadra Foundation supported the work of the AAR group Religion and the Literary in Tibet by funding a workshop at the University of California, Berkeley, organized by Jacob Dalton, Kurtis Schaeffer, Andy Quintman and Janet Gyatso. This workshop was the culmination of a five-year series of meetings held with leading scholar-translators in the field. A published volume of essays is expected in 2018, containing the blue prints for more nuanced literary understandings of Tibetan writings.
